A Visit to the Collection of Sten Sjøstrand
8am Sunday, 11 June 2017
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
SEACS has arranged a special visit to Sten Sjøstrand to see his ceramic artefacts from the ten different shipwrecks discovered and excavated by him. Originally from Sweden, Sten spent 20 years in Singapore working with design of marine/offshore structures and has lived in Malaysia for 27 years working with ancient shipwrecks from the 11th to 19th centuries. Today he resides in Kuala Lumpur. His extensive published works include co-authoring (with Roxanna Brown) the classic Maritime Archaeology and Shipwreck Ceramics in Malaysia (2000). Sten’s research was featured in an extensive exhibition held at the Muzium Negara, Kuala Lumpur in 2001 that featured artefacts from seven shipwrecks found in the South China Sea, spanning 500 years with estimated dates ranging from 1370 to 1845 (the Turiang, Nanyang, Longguan, Royal Nanhai, Xuande, Singtai and Desaru).
For more on Sten’s research, see www.mingwrecks.com and click on “The
shipwrecks” tab. His latest book can be found at www.mingwrecks.com/publications.html. You may also like to visit www.thewanlishipwreck.com for more information on the Wanli shipwreck. Various online videos can be found by searching “Sten Sjostrand” on www.youtube.com.
Departure will be at 8am on Sunday 11 June, and transport will be by private limousine service in comfortable 7-seater vehicles on a day trip to and from Kuala Lumpur, returning approximately at 7.30pm to Singapore. Upon arrival in Kuala Lumpur, there will be lunch in the nearby Chinese restaurant iDragon I, before the visit to Sten’s private collection. SEACS members going on this trip need to gather at 7.45am in the parking lot of The Legend (361 Bukit Timah Road, Singapore 259725), which is a 5-minute walk from Stevens Road MRT station. (Vehicles may be parked for the day in the rear visitors’ parking lot, where the limousine service will also return at the end of the trip.) Please remember to bring along your passport.
Spaces are limited so all SEACS members wishing to participate should compete a Registration and Release Form and mail it together with a cheque of SGD 250 as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Please email firstname.lastname@example.org for a copy of this Registration and Release Form. Attendance will be confirmed in accordance with the date in which cheques are received. Successful participants will be confirmed by email; unsuccessful applicants will have their cheques returned. This event is open to SEACS members only.
