A Visit to the Collection of Sten Sjøstrand
8am Sunday, 11 June 2017
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
SEACS has arranged a special visit to Sten Sjøstrand to see his ceramic artefacts from the ten different shipwrecks discovered and excavated by him. Originally from Sweden, Sten spent 20 years in Singapore working with design of marine/offshore structures and has lived in Malaysia for 27 years working with ancient shipwrecks from the 11th to 19th centuries. Today he resides in Kuala Lumpur. His extensive published works include co-authoring (with Roxanna Brown) the classic Maritime Archaeology and Shipwreck Ceramics in Malaysia (2000). Sten’s research was featured in an extensive exhibition held at the Muzium Negara, Kuala Lumpur in 2001 that featured artefacts from seven shipwrecks found in the South China Sea, spanning 500 years with estimated dates ranging from 1370 to 1845 (the Turiang, Nanyang, Longguan, Royal Nanhai, Xuande, Singtai and Desaru).
For more on Sten’s research, see www.mingwrecks.com and click on “The
shipwrecks” tab. His latest book can be found at www.mingwrecks.com/publications.html. You may also like to visit www.thewanlishipwreck.com for more information on the Wanli shipwreck. Various online videos can be found by searching “Sten Sjostrand” on www.youtube.com.
