The 2015 William Willetts Annual Lecture Series

by Dr. Stacey Pierson

This lecture introduced Ding, Ru, Jun, Guan and Ge wares from a connoisseurship perspective. Beginning with their classification as ‘the Five Classic Wares of the Song’ in early Ming texts, our speaker explained what made these wares, out of the many produced in the Song, so exceptional. Their glazes and bodies, forms and decoration were discussed as well as their continued appreciation today in collections, museums, the art market and the literature of world ceramics.

About the speaker:

A recent book at the time of this talk was: From Object to Concept: Global Consumption and the Transformation of Ming Porcelain, Hong Kong University Press, 2013.
