A Siam Society Lecture: Year of the Rooster

by Mrs. Patricia Bjaaland Welch

The Symbolism of the Rooster in Chinese Culture

Roosters have served as important symbols in China for thousands of years, found on every conceivable artefact from tombs to porcelain wine cups, and reached their peak in popularity during the Qing Dynasty. Members traced their history through a series of historic artefacts and stories to learn why barnyard fowl were and still are so highly beloved as symbols of familial joy and continuity as the Chinese Year of the Rooster approached. (And why one Thai king in particular is so often associated with, and depicted with, roosters!)
