SEACS’ Annual General Meeting (for members only) will be held in the ACM Auditorium on Saturday 14 March 2026. The Annual William Willetts Lecture will follow the AGM in the same location and is open to the general public. This year’s speaker will be Dr. Michael Flecker.
Mike Flecker has come a long way from his first Asian tableware experience, breakfasting on papaya and lime from CK Tang’s exquisite melamine collection while voyaging the South China Sea in 1984. As a slight indulgence after all these years, Mike will relate his personal journey from sailing bum to civil engineer to the fascinating world of shipwrecks, which inevitably led him to the fascinating world of ceramics. Of course, ceramics will be the focus, but this time they will be presented in order of discovery and excavation. Hence a complete jumble of periods from the 9th to the 19th century, showcasing a wide variety of Chinese and Thai wares. Unlike a conventional chronology, this narrative illustrates an ad hoc learning journey. It reflects the ongoing broadening of our knowledge made possible by these shipwreck finds and others like them.
