Congratulations to our past President Prof John N Miksic for being conferred the Public Service Medal for his contribution to developing archaeology in Singapore at this year's National Day Awards Ceremony. John has been a long-time friend and mentor of the society, serving on its Council for many years before taking on the Presidency 2020-2022. He has given the society countless talks and led us on fascinating field trips from Java to Myanmar to Kedah, sharing his enthusiasm and his knowledge with our members and their families, inspiring new generations of archaeologists.
The Southeast Asian Ceramic Society is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. The Society has staged numerous important exhibitions through these four decades, and its members have been involved in much research on the subject of ceramics in Southeast Asia.
The talk started off with Prof. Miksic elucidating the reason for the talk's curious title, alluding to aspects of archaeology, which share resonance with ‘guerrilla warfare’.
For many people, Myanmar ceramics are synonymous with the word "martaban", but this does not do justice to the wide range of ceramics made in that country.
