What Makes a Masterpiece?
The Five Classic Wares of the Song and their Histories

This lecture will consider Ding, Ru, Jun, Guan and Ge wares from a connoisseurship perspective. Beginning with their classification as ‘the Five Classic Wares of the Song’ in early Ming texts, we will examine what made these wares, out of the many produced in the Song, so exceptional. Their glazes and bodies, forms and decoration will be discussed as well as their continued appreciation today in collections, museums, the art market and the literature of world ceramics.

Stacey Pierson is Senior Lecturer in Chinese Ceramics at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. She was formerly Curator of the Percival David Foundation at the same university and has published widely on the subject of this collection as well as Chinese ceramics in general. Her most recent book is titled: From Object to Concept: Global Consumption and the Transformation of Ming Porcelain, Hong Kong University Press, 2013.

7.30pm SEACS members, their guests and the public are invited to attend the WW Lecture.
