Asian
Civilisations Museum, Empress Place
Singapore
Speaker: Professor Wang Gungwu
Title of lecture: "Tribute and Trade: the Ming Dynasty"
The founder of the Ming dynasty banned private external trade
and channelled foreign trade through the tribute system. His successors sent
Zheng He on expeditions to the Indian Ocean but eventually the expeditions
were stopped even though they enhanced overseas trade. Despite the official
ban, the
China trade continued to grow for over 200 years.
